The 1873 Kellas one-room schoolhouse is available for
classes. In the Kellas School, children get to experience a school setting
similar to that of over 100 years ago. The school is located on the grounds of
the museum at 203 N. Main.
Teachers
can plan to spend a morning, an afternoon or all day. The school is furnished
with wooden school desks for students, slates, a hand bell, a teacher's desk
and four sets of McGuffey Readers (grades 1st to 4th - 25 books per set).
Restroom facilities and drinking water are available during the "school
day" inside the museum The school is equipped with a pot-bellied stove
that has been converted to gas for winter classes. The lighting is from
the windows only, there is no electricity. Classes have enjoyed dressing in
period clothes, bringing their lunch in old syrup cans and participating in
games that would have been played by children of that era.
