Those visiting the museum this summer (or even passing by) may notice the masonry restoration project taking place. Planned work includes repointing all exterior masonry, replacing broken bricks and limestone sillstones, and sealing window frames on the ground level. The project reflects the vision and proactive planning of the board of directors, who are acting before natural wear leads to further moisture damage on the exterior or allows water damage to the interior.
HCHM extends our gratitude to those who have supported this project at any level. Fundraising will continue through 2010, with tax credit eligible donations accepted through June 30, and other contributions welcome through December 31. Total cost of the project is $21,546, all of which is funded through donor support. “Large restoration and maintenance projects, such as this, are just not possible using our regular operating budget,” states museum director Debra Hiebert. “It is only through the generous support of our community that we are able to maintain this historic structure. Funding for the project is currently just under $17,000, and a gift of any size can help the museum can reach our goal. We appreciate everyone who has made this project a reality and encourage others to consider a donation.”
Tax credit donations need to be received by June 30. The $10,000 in tax credits were awarded through the Kansas State Historical Society’s Partnership Historic Sites program. Donors meeting the qualifications of the program will receive a portion of their donation back from the Department of Revenue. State tax credits will be issued for donations of $1,000 to $5,000, and the amount of reimbursement for this program will be 45% of the donated amount, with the remaining 55% eligible to be claimed as a charitable contribution on state and federal tax returns. “This means that the actual out-of-pocket expense for someone who donates $1,000 is approximately $350, which is a great deal for everyone involved!” Hiebert added. Donors who contribute in 2009 may also contribute in 2010 to take advantage of the credits in the new tax year.

This damaged limestone sill is an example of what will be restored during the masonry project. In addition, bricks will be repointed to prevent moisture damage, damaged bricks replaced, and first-floor window frames cleaned of old sealant and re-sealed.
